The Board of Westside Circus is pleased to announce the appointment of Simon Clarke as Chief Executive Officer.
Westside Board Chair, Professor Peter Matthews said, “The Board is excited to appoint Simon as CEO and we are confident that he will continue the excellent work he has so enthusiastically initiated in the past 12 months as interim CEO. Simon’s depth of experience and energy will ensure that Westside Circus continues its growth as a dynamic arts organisation focusing on work with and for young people.”
Simon has been working in theatre with a focus on young and emerging artists and youth audiences for almost 20 years. He has produced, directed and performed in numerous independent shows and worked with companies such as Jigsaw Theatre, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and Black Swan Theatre Company. In 2007 he was appointed CEO/Artistic Director of Southern Edge Arts in WA and led the company through a period of significant growth, working in circus, dance and theatre. He was elected to the Board of Country Arts WA in 2009 and was appointed Vice-Chair in 2010. He chaired the WA Regional Arts Fund Panel and in 2011 he joined the Board of Young People and the Arts Australia.
Simon said, “I’m really looking forward to seeing where we can take this company. We have a great team in the office, training staff and on the Board. The company is in an excellent place and ready to move into an exciting future. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to lead the company through the next stage of development. I thank all the talented people who have made Westside Circus the company it is today; in particular I thank my immediate predecessor Lena Cirillo for her resolute and passionate leadership.”
Lena Cirillo will step down from her role as Executive Director at the conclusion of 14 months of maternity leave to pursue roles in consideration of her change in personal circumstances. In thanking Lena the Chair said, “Lena has made a significant contribution to Westside Circus. In particular, we commend Lena for her efficient management of a major organisational relocation to Brunswick and for tireless work in raising the profile of Westside with state and federal funding bodies.”
