HOW DID THE COMPANY START?
Flipside started in a park in Brisbane’s West End in 1997. Two circus trainers and a bunch of kids gathered under a tree. The group grew until they needed to find a permanent home. Flipside became Incorporated in 1998 and moved to the Brisbane Powerhouse in 2003 where we trained for 7 years. Finally outgrowing the Powerhouse we moved in 2010 into our own circus training centre at Alderley.
WHAT DOES THE COMPANY DO?
Through training and performance opportunities Flipside provides children and young people with experiences that support their physical, social and artistic development. Flipside performances are enthusiastically enjoyed by a range of audiences.
WHAT DOES CIRCUS MEAN TO YOU?
Innovation, family, laughter and fun, kids, popcorn, awe inspiring moments, laughing until it hurts, hurting, surface burns, safety,
WHAT’S THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE COMPANY’S CIRCUS CAREER SO FAR?
Probably moving into our own place and having much more control over our own destiny. This has helped us grow so much as a team. Our programming has also grown and is strong – kids have a clear pathway now right from the beginners class through to a professional career. Flipside rocks!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE COMPANY MOMENT?
There are soooooo many favourite company moments. There was the time in 2009 when five of our students were accepted into NICA – we were very proud! Watching our Wriggles class (18 months old) performing on the Brisbane Powerhouse stage this year or Flipside hosting the ACAPTA Youth Circus Symposium! All great moments!
WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN 5 YEARS TIME?
Hmmmmmm probably stronger financially. We are working hard developing our business to not be reliant on funding. Celebrating our 18th birthday!
WHY DO WE NEED CIRCUS IN THE WORLD?
We couldn’t imagine the world without circus – what a terrible place that would be. Circus makes people laugh, gasp in surprise or hold their breath with anticipation. One of our students was contemplating his future one day and was concerned if the circus was really for him as a career. We talked and discussed how amazing it was to have a job that made people have a physical reaction to what you do……they laugh, cry and leave your performance feeling great! Not many careers offer that these days!
