
Training the Circus Trainer [The Circus Spot]
In the last week of January, The Circus Spot will be running three days of training for circus coaches. This series of workshops are intended for both new and experienced coaches, as a way to develop your existing teaching practices, and expand your range and knowledge in teaching on a variety of apparatus. Many sessions will differentiate between teaching for adults and kids. Participants can choose to register for one, two or three days. Complementing the train the trainer program, we will also be running a master-class program for those wanting some personal skill development.
About the trainers:
Andrea Ousley – New Trainers, Games
Andrea was the Head of Training and Outreach Coordinator for the Women’s Circus from 2000 to 2005. She also developed the New Women’s induction program. In 2003 Andrea was appointed trainer for the Cirque du Monde program in South-East Asia and South Africa. She was also appointed to facilitate the Cirque du Soleil
Train the Trainer Program nationally and internationally. She joined the NICA Social Circus team in 2005. Andrea has worked as Head Trainer, Circus/Physical director with Westside Circus, Footscray Flyers, Swinburne Small Companies and Community Theatre Diploma
Her teaching focus is to use circus as a tool for social change.
Bec Cooen – Hula Hoops
A graduate of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus; Specializing in web, rotating perch, aerial ring, trapeze and acrobatics, contortion and glasses balance (taught by Ms Lu Xiao Zhu and Mr Chen Xi Chen). Bec has performed throughout Australia, Singapore, Russia and New York; holds a BA in Drama, Dance and Photography at Deakin University. Recently returned from teaching in Cambodia, Bec teaches circus in schools, public programs, and indigenous communities in the top end.
Christian Parr – Juggling, Manipulation
With over 20 years of experience within the circus arts, Christian is an accomplished and highly experienced circus trainer specialising in juggling and manipulation. His passion is social circus, and his most proud achievement to date is founding the Melbourne Juggling Convention, an annual community circus event attracting people from all over the world.
Daniel Rabin – New Trainers, Games, Rigging
Daniel has worked as a circus performer, rigger and coach for over a decade. A graduate of NICA, Daniel’s varied performance experience includes; touring with Circus Quirkus, producer and performer with the progressive circus company Throw Down, a stint with the traditional family circus Circus Royale and even supporting the rock band The Dresden Dolls. As a rigger, Daniel has kept many other performers safely in the air, for companies such as Dislocate, NICA, Circus Oz, Festival Melbourne and The Crusty Demons.
Free Coulston – Tissu, Aerial Ring
With a background in rhythmic gymnastics, Free has trained at the Vulcana Womens Circus, NICA, and with renowned aerial coach Rodleigh Stevens of Ringling Bros. fame. Free specialises in Tissue, Aerial Ring and Double Trapeze. Free also coaches for The Circus Spot, Circus Oz, holds a bachelor degree in Science and is currently completing a Doctor of Physiotherapy at the University of Melbourne.
Leonie Mills – Trapeze for Kids
With over 30 years professional coaching experience, Leonie has taught thousands of children and adults aerials, acrobatics and tumbling. Leonie is the founder of Spaghetti Circus, which will be celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2012. Formerly a member of the national gymnastics team, Leonie is recognised throughout Australia for her depth of knowledge and ability in teaching aerials to kids of all ages and abilities.
Matty Brown – Tumbling, Conditioning, Drills and Skills
After 10 years of elite gymnastics training and competing at a National Level, Matty moved into Circus Arts and performing. In 2005 Mat graduated from NICA with a Bachelor of Circus Arts and since has worked and performed as an accomplished acrobat for companies such as Cirque Du Soleil, Entertainment Store Group and Circus Oz. Since the age of 16 Matty has been teaching and instructing gymnastics, acrobatics and tumbling to all age groups, covering a whole variety of sprung floor and hard floor - drills, skills and techniques for circus performers, gymnasts, dancers and stunts.
Rockie Stone - Cloudswing
Rockie Stone is an Australian circus performer with a drive to create art with her body. Rockie has been a core ensemble member of Circa (2002-05) and Circus Oz (2007-10), has performed throughout Australia and internationally. She has a Science degree from University of Melbourne, has studied at National Institute of Circus Arts, and just last year attained a Postgraduate Diploma - Performance Making from Victorian College of the Arts.Rockie specialises in Corde Lisse, Cloudswing, Acrobalance, Chinese Pole, Tower of Chairs, Duo Bike and Bottle-walking.
Spenser Ingwood – Trapeze
Flying Fruit Fly Circus graduate specialising in swinging and static trapeze, aerial ring, spanish web, rotating perch and chairs. After graduating Fruit Fly’s Spenser has been training with Anna Shelper (swinging trapeze). Currently teaching aerials at the Womens Circus and Circus Oz and has been teaching in Australia for 5 years. She has performed throughout Australia, Singapore, Vancouver, Abu Dhabi and Hong Kong since the age of 8.
