GREENING THE CANVAS
From the humble beginnings of Greening the Canvas comes Greening Our Performance(GOP).
GOP is an alliance of performing arts companies and individuals who are striving to reduce our industry’s carbon footprint.
Organizations such as: Malthouse Theatre, Australian Circus and Physical Theatre Association (ACAPTA), Tipping Point Australia, ClimARTe, Circus Oz, ArtsHouse and Arts Centre Melbourne have been involved so far to bring this alliance to reality.
GOP aims to:
- Support each other in our endeavour to change the way we do things to reduce our resource use;
- Offer information to enable us to create and implement sustainability plans;
- Share resources and ideas;
- Develop and share innovative solutions;
- Encourage realistic and sustainable commitment from participants.

forum for environmental change in circus and physical theatre.
The circus and physical theatre industry has decided to get its act together for environmental change. In November last year the Australian Physical Theatre and Circus Association (ACAPTA) held a forum for it’s members, exploring how circus and physical theatre can save the world. A playful forum topic designed to open up discussions of what matters to the sector rather than making any extreme assertions, the forum activated several important conversations among its delegates.
One of the most significant of these conversations was environmental sustainability in circus and physical theatre, and the limits of understanding, communication and resources among the sector. It was agreed that sharing knowledge and informing the circus and physical theatre community of the sustainable choices available would make the first important step to reducing the industry’s carbon foot print.
Facilitated by the producer of Tipping Point Australia, Creative Producer at Arts House and independent arts consultant Angharad Wynne-Jones, with guest speakers Jane Mullett (Research Fellow, Climate Change Adaptation Program, Global Cities Research Institute, RMIT) and Guy Abrahams (co-founder of CLIMARTE). Event coordinator Annie Stephens (Community and Corporate Programs Coordinator, Circus Oz) describes the forum as “an opportunity to listen, discuss, share ideas and ask questions about environmentally sustainable arts practice.”
Greening the Canvas will be the first in a series of forums designed to support the circus and physical theatre community in making the shifts needed for our changing future. The format of the event will encourage communication, shared ideas and action plans, rather than prescriptive lecturing, and participants are invited to inform the shape of future forums.
