Following from Richard Watt’s Space Shortage article on ArtsHub in Nov ’13, and after lengthy conversations with performers about lack of training facilities around Australia, Flipside Circus extends a warm invitation nationally to hear from independent circus companies, individual performers as well as other art forms to participate in an Artist in Residency Program in Brisbane.
The Flipside Circus Training Centre is a very exciting addition to Brisbane’s cultural landscape. With a ceiling height of 7.3 metres, the space comprises a 1500 square metre warehouse space equipped with aerial and ground circus equipment.
Numerous independent artists and companies consistently utilise our facility. Companies and shows that have recently developed shows at the Flipside Circus Training Centre include:
- Casus – Knee Deep
- Company 2 – Scotch & Soda
- Company 2 – Sediment
- Company 2 – She Would Walk the Sky
- Sold State Circus
- Lost in Translation Circus
- Needs More Sault
- Hot Brown Honey Burlesque
- Strong Lady Productions
As independent artists, a well-equipped space to train and create new work is one of our most essential resources. The Flipside warehouse was ideal for creating new work, with both privacy and plenty of space. There was also the very valuable resource of having 2 other professional companies training and creating other shows through the same period. This was a great motivation and created an exciting, focused atmosphere in which to work. - Charmaine Childs – Strong Lady
Flipside Circus was the perfect venue for our creative development, the use of space and equipment (in particular the safety lines and swinging rig, as well as the sound system) were invaluable to us during this time. The residency gave us the opportunity to create the beginning of a new show for the Woodford Folk Festival, with performers from around the world able to come together. - Lost in Translation
