SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE PRESENTS FLYING FRUIT FLY CIRCUS IN

CIRCUS UNDER MY BED

An essential national treasure, determined to delight. It’s hard to find more bang foryour buck!” Sydney Morning Herald

Youthful energy and the magic of circus combine this summer in Circus Under My Bed. The Flying Fruit Fly Circus reaches giddy new heights when the circus comes to town at Sydney Opera House from 14 – 25 January 2014, as part of Summer at the House.

A young girl lost in her imagination dreams of a circus hidden in her bedroom. In cupboards. Behind curtains. Inside toy boxes. Under her bed. Who better to blame for your messy room than your imaginary friends? As the circus of her dreams comes to life we share her journey and meet some quirky characters along the way.

Unlike anything else you will experience on the Australian stage, the Fruities, as they are affectionately known, is a troupe aged nine – 19 from Australia’s only full-time circus school. With skills ranging from trapeze and contortion to clowning and magic, these talented artists will impress and inspire the young and young at heart. Circus Under My Bed marks the Fruities’ return to the Sydney stage after the smash-hit, Helpmann Award winning 2009 production The Promise.

After decades showcasing young emerging performers the Fruities will celebrate their 35th anniversary in 2014. Richard Hull, Executive Director of the Flying Fruit Fly Circus, believes this will make a fitting start to the anniversary “We are thrilled to be bringing a new show to Sydney Opera House in our 35th anniversary year. This show celebrates our traditional circus roots and unique history of inspiring ordinary kids to do extraordinary things. It tells a beautifully simple story through the magical delights of circus and vaudeville, as reinterpreted for a contemporary audience by our highly skilled young performers. With a wonderful creative team led by Artistic Director Jodie Farrugia, it will appeal to children of all ages and the children in us all.”

Andrew Spencer, Executive Producer of Sydney Opera House Presents, says this is a great excuse for families to run away to the circus together. “Sydney Opera House is proud to bring companies like the Flying Fruit Fly Circus to Sydney to show family audiences what young performers can achieve.

There is a real sense of excitement in witnessing the talents of these emerging artists. They bring boundless enthusiasm and fun to the stage, or the circus tent in this case! The Fruities are an impressive troupe of performers andoftenan inspiration to many young kids in the audience.”

The Flying Fruit Fly Circus was founded in 1979 and has introduced over 30,000 young people to the circus arts through training programs and workshops. With a string of Australian and international awards the company has toured the world extensively and aligned with circus training organisations in China and Moscow to further the skills and experience of the Fruities students.
