Simone O’Brien is a freelance performance maker, writer, teacher and director of circus and physical theatre. From 2006 – 2012, Simone enjoyed the role of the Artistic Associate with Legs On The Wall physical theatre company where she delivered artist development and social circus programs, physical theatre curriculum for the secondary and tertiary education sectors and directed small scale and large scale aerial events. She has made work with and for the community, education and corporate sectors including Redfern Community Centre, the National Centre for Indigenous Excellence, National Institute for Circus Arts, the National Institute of Dramatic Art and the Beijing Olympics.
Simone specializes in aerial, trapeze, harness work and contemporary performance drawing upon an eclectic mix of influences to make work. Simone has worked as a mentor, choreographer and director with a wide range of artists and organisations including: Bibi Bulak in East Timor, Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority, Woodford Folk Festival Fire Event, Aerial director for the Aerodome Departure Lounge and Balloon Spectacular at Canberra’s Enlighten Festival, Adelaide Festival Club (Barrio and Lola’s Pergola) host, Circus Oz, JUMP mentorship program, Force Majeure, Casula Powerhouse Way Out West Festival, Circus Festivals in the WA, Mullumbimby and Tasmania, Hoopla Circus Festival, Sandfly Circus in Broome, Flying Fruit Fly Circus and the Catapult Youth Circus Festival.
Recent professional development includes:
- Ecole Philippe Gaulier, Paris, Summer School, July 2013: Clown and Le Jeu
- Emerging director in Cultivate (2011) and Culminate (2012), Force Majeure’s and Performance Space’s directing laboratories, Carriageworks, Sydney.
- Art of Play – Children’s experimental theatre with Chiara Guidi, (Societas Rafaelo di Sanzio), Campbelltown Arts Centre, NSW. 2010
- Asialink Residency in East Timor – 3 month teaching circus and physical theatre with Bibi Bulak performance troupe & the Galaxy band, 2005.
