NYCS13 was an exciting, challenging and fun opportunity to make a difference and to determine the future for this vibrant, inspiring and resilient sector. All youth circus companies and independent youth circus practitioners were welcome to attend and have their say in developing the ‘National Youth Circus Strategy’.
Katy Barr, Marketing Operations Coordinator at Warehouse Circus reported the following in her recent newsletter.
“Last weekend, youth circus companies from across Australia ventured to our chilly capital for the National Youth Circus Symposium 2013.
Delegates included Flipsyde Circus from Brisbane, Circus Oz from Melbourne, Spaghetti Circus from Mullumbimby, Catapult Festival from Bathurst, Circus Monoxide from Woolongong, Cirkidz from Adelaide, Flying Fruit Fly Circus from Albury, The Flying Indoor Trapeze Centre from Melbourne, Skylark Circus from Melbourne, Lady Torpedo Productions from Brisbane and ACAPTA.
It started with dinner on Friday at a Bite to Eat in Chifley, where our attendees received a warm welcome from our Chairman, Stephen Walker, on behalf of Warehouse Circus, and ate a very tasty meal. The next morning in the freezing cold and blurry fog, the symposium sessions started. Hearing from each organisation, it became clear that the youth circus sector is full of amazing and talented people, passionate about delivering circus to young people. We discussed challenges we are facing, future direction as a sector and lots in between. At the end of a full on day of discussions, Warehouse Circus Volunteers hosted a BBQ and A-Troupe performed in the space; it was a great show and our guests were delighted to see our students in action. On the second day, energies were focused on bringing all we had discussed together to form the bones of what will be a written strategy for the direction of our sector as a whole.
It was a huge three days for Warehouse Circus staff, with the Warehouse Circus Kaleen launch, then symposium dinner, then two full days of discussions and hosting, but what a fantastic three days for Warehouse! A big thank you to our amazing volunteers who helped us and to A-Troupe for the performance and for eating all the left over food!”
