Calvin Grant [NSW]

HOW DID YOU GET INTO CIRCUS/PHYSICAL THEATRE?
I went to Catapult 07 with my school group and thought it was awesome, so decided to make my own group Circaholics Anonymous so I could do it for a living, and have never looked back.

WHAT ELSE DO YOU DO?
I work for an insurance company by day, and then twirl fire by night, so its one extreme to another really.

WHAT DOES CIRCUS/PHYSICAL THEATRE MEAN TO YOU?
Circus/Physical Theatre is a way for performing artists to portray and display certain skills, stories and ideals that are not ‘conventional performing’ so gives a much wider variety of shows for people to see.

WHAT’S THE HIGHLIGHT OF YOUR CIRCUS/PHYSICAL THEATRE CAREER SO FAR?
Me personally, I have been on TV a few times as well as in newspapers, been in some video clips and films, but for the group as a whole its being recognised for who we are and what we do before we even start performing.

IF YOU WEREN’T DOING CIRCUS/PHYSICAL THEATRE, WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING RIGHT NOW?
Something extremely boring and ‘normal’ no doubt, however if I could not do what I am now I always wanted to get into theatre performing, which is still on my mind but circus is currently winning.

WHAT SKILLS DO YOU LIKE PERFORMING AND WHY?
My group and I specialise in fire performing because it is something that not everyone does and it is an excellent way to take performing to the next level and test your skills to the extreme.

WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN 5 YEARS TIME?
I would like to be performing full time in large scale performances for festivals and large events, as well as be recognised as one of the best fire practitioners in the industry.

WHY DO WE NEED CIRCUS/PHYSICAL THEATRE IN THE WORLD?
The world has lots of hum drum boring office type folk and ‘rules’ which unfortunately has majority vote in today’s society, which is why circus and physical theatre is so important as it breaks away from the conventional performing and shows a different view and life people can live, and a different type of fun they can have. Most people want this, they just need a little push in the right direction to inspire them to follow it, and in turn inspire others to join.
